For the month of February, quilts created by Glenda Alvin will be on display in the Art Corner of Brown-Daniel Library.

Inspired by her grandmother, Betty Ivy from Prairie, MS, Glenda Alvin began quilting more than twenty-five years ago after taking an adult evening class in the Mercer County School System in Trenton, NJ. Patchwork or “piecing” is her favorite form of quilting.

Beginning with wall hangings and doll quilts, Glenda progressed to making mostly pictorial bed-size quilts. Floral, or novelty designs with African, African American, or Asian themes are her favorite fabrics.

Glenda says, “My grandmother made beautiful hand quilted patterns like the Double Wedding Ring, from fabric scraps using newspaper for paper piecing and cardboard for template. Quilting creatively requires the ability to see cloth in ways that represent your vision and your perspectives for artistic expression. Many of my quilts have panels, because I like to create scenes in any size that may tell a story or represent a period in history. If I use a pattern, I like to reimagine it from an African American perspective.”
