Department of Transportation
The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) is a federal Cabinet department of the U.S. government concerned with transportation. Congress established the DOT on October 15, 1966, and began operation on April 1, 1967.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) is a government office that compiles, analyzes, and publishes information on the nation's transportation systems across various modes and strives to improve the DOT's statistical programs through research and the development of data collection and analysis guidelines. BTS is a principal agency of the U.S. Federal Statistical System.
Federal Aviation Administration
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulates civil aviation in the United States and surrounding international waters. Its powers include air traffic control, certification of personnel and aircraft, setting standards for airports, and protection of U.S. assets during the launch or re-entry of commercial space vehicles; powers over neighboring international waters were delegated to the FAA by the authority of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
Federal Highway Administration
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) specializes in highway transportation. The agency's principal activities are grouped into the Federal-aid Highway Program and the Federal Lands Highway Program. The FHWA's role in the Federal-aid Highway Program is to oversee federal funds, mainly from the federal gasoline tax, to build and maintain the National Highway System. 
Federal Railroad Administration
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) promulgates and enforces rail safety regulations, administers railroad assistance programs, conducts research and development to improve railroad safety and national rail transportation policy, provides for the rehabilitation of Northeast Corridor rail passenger service, and consolidates government support of rail transportation activities.
Federal Transit Administration
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) provides financial and technical assistance to local public transportation systems. It is one of ten modal administrations within the DOT. Headed by an Administrator whom the President of the United States appoints, the FTA functions through its Washington, D.C. headquarters office and ten regional offices that assist transit agencies in all states, the District of Columbia, and the territories.

 

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) focuses on transportation safety in the United States. NHTSA is charged with writing and enforcing Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and regulations for motor vehicle theft resistance and fuel economy. The agency asserts preemptive regulatory authority over greenhouse gas emissions.
