Federal Housing Administration
The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) is a United States government agency whose primary function is to provide insurance for mortgages originated by private lenders for various types of properties, including single-family homes, multifamily rental properties, hospitals, and residential care facilities. FHA mortgage insurance serves to safeguard these private lenders from financial losses.
Federal Housing Finance Agency
The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) is an independent federal agency that regulates Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the 11 Federal Home Loan Banks. It is wholly separate from the Federal Housing Administration, which primarily provides mortgage insurance. It has the authority to place government-sponsored enterprises into receivership or conservatorship.
Government National Mortgage Association
The Government National Mortgage Association (GNMA or Ginnie Mae) is a government-owned corporation of the U.S. Federal Government. It works to expand affordable housing by guaranteeing home mortgages, thereby lowering financing costs such as interest rates for those loans. It guarantees investors the on-time payment of mortgage-backed securities even if homeowners default on the underlying.

Office of Community Planning and Development
The Community Planning and Development administers grant programs that help communities plan and finance their growth and development and increase their capacity to govern and provide shelter and services for homeless people. HUD is a national program that provides funding directly to larger cities and counties and, for smaller cities and counties, generally to state government.
Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity
The Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) administers and enforces federal fair housing laws and establishes policies to ensure equal access to care for all Americans. Its mission is to create equal housing opportunities for all persons living in the U.S. by administering laws that prohibit discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, and familial status.
