Administration for Children and Families
This administration provides national leadership and creates opportunities for families to lead economically and socially productive lives. The ACF designs programs to help children develop into healthy adults and communities to become more prosperous and supportive of their members. These programs include assistance with welfare, child support enforcement, adoption assistance, foster care, childcare, and child abuse.
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality enhances healthcare services' quality, appropriateness, effectiveness, and access to care by conducting and supporting research, demonstration projects, and evaluations; developing guidelines; and disseminating information on healthcare services and delivery systems.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the national public health agency of the United States. It is a federal agency under the Department of Health and Human Services headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The agency's primary goal is to protect public health and safety by controlling and preventing disease, injury, and disability in the U.S. and worldwide.

 

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administers the Medicare and Medicaid programs, the Children's Health Insurance Program, and health insurance portability standards. CMS is also responsible for the administrative simplification standards from the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, quality standards in long-term nursing homes, clinical laboratory quality standards, and oversight of HealthCare.gov.

 

Food and Drug Administration
The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the control and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, caffeine products, dietary supplements, prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs, vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, blood transfusions, medical devices, electromagnetic radiation emitting devices, cosmetics, animal foods and feed, and veterinary products.

 

Health Resources and Services Administration
HRSA is the primary federal agency for improving access to health care services for the uninsured, isolated, or medically vulnerable. It provides leadership and financial support to U.S. healthcare providers. Its grantees provide health care to uninsured people, people living with HIV/AIDS, and pregnant women, mothers, and children. They also train health professionals and improve systems of care in rural communities.
Indian Health Service
The Indian Health Service (IHS) provides direct medical and public health services to members of federally recognized Native American Tribes and Alaska Native people. IHS is the principal federal healthcare provider and health advocate for Native Americans. The IHS provides health care in 37 states to approximately 2.2 million out of 3.7 million American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN).
National Institutes of Health
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical and public health research. The NIH conducts its scientific research through the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP) and provides significant biomedical research funding to non-NIH research facilities through its Extramural Research Program.
National Vital Statistics System
The National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) is an intergovernmental system that shares data on the vital statistics of the United States population. It coordinates between the different state health departments of the U.S. states and the National Center for Health Statistics. Academic researchers have cited data from NVSS on many topics, and libraries have pointed to it as an official data source for the vital statistics of the U.S.
Office of the Surgeon General
The surgeon general of the United States is the operational head of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and, thus, the leading spokesperson for public health matters in the federal government. The surgeon general is the ultimate award authority for several public health awards and decorations, educates the American public about health issues, advocates healthy lifestyle choices, and issues health warnings. 

 

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is charged with improving the quality and availability of treatment and rehabilitative services to reduce illness, death, disability, and the cost to society resulting from substance abuse and mental illnesses. Its mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on American communities.
