TSU Library Faculty Tenure and Promotion Guide: Home

Guide provides information for tenure and promotion of library faculty

Tenure and Promotion Guidelines

The Libraries and Media Centers follow the guidelines for tenure and promotion in the TSU Faculty Handbook adopted on August 28, 2020, with regards to research, teaching and service, with one exception. Emphasis will be placed on how well the faculty member has demonstrated librarianship, as well as teaching ability. The portfolio section dealing with this requirement should be labelled "Librarianship/Teaching."  Portfolios must also contain the ALA statement on the terminal degree status of ALA accredited masters programs.

ACRL Guidelines for Appointment, Tenure and Promotion of Academic Librarians

Introduction

This Guideline for Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure is intended for use where librarians have faculty status. It is intended for application within the context of two ACRL policy statements on faculty status for academic librarians, 1 as well as related statements issued by the American Association of University Professors. 2 The objective of this Guideline is to propose criteria and procedures for appointment, promotion in academic rank, and tenure (continuous appointment) for use in academic libraries. Utilizing these criteria and procedures will ensure that the library faculty and, therefore, library services will be of the highest quality possible. These criteria are intended to be minimal only. These procedures may need to be adjusted in minor detail to conform with existing institutional procedures for other faculty. Any contractual procedures must be observed.

Evaluation

Library Faculty will be evaluated for tenure and/or promotion by the Department  Tenure and Promotion Committee, the College Tenure and Promotion Committee, the Department Chair, the Dean of Libraries and Media Centers and the University Faculty Personnel Committee.

If there is an insufficient number of tenured librarians for a College Committee, the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs will appoint a committee from one of the other Colleges.
