Bruce Schneier, Security Guru

Schneier is a cryptologist who has taken up various cyber security causes. He comments on NSA and police eavesdropping, and also companies using dubious copyright interpretations to prevent anyone but themselves from using or working on their products. He suggests that in the future your dishwasher might be programmed to use Palmolive soap only. Keurig has already done this: only Keurig canisters or those licensed by Keurig can be used; this is enforced by a code embedded on each canister.

In his blog, Schneier On Security, he also mentions the abysmal security which comes with most internet-connected devices. The username is usually "admin", the password, “12345” or “password”, which of course bad guys can easily guess. Such things as TVs, thermostats, cameras, locks, computer peripherals, autos, medical devices, pacemakers, any device which is web connected, can become “bots” which on a signal will all send requests to the target computer at once, causing it to shut down (This the DDOS or distributed denial of service attack.) When larger machines such as refrigerators, stoves, heaters, washing machines or dishwashers become connected, they could conceivably be used to put out a power station if someone could turn them on all at once. Usually we hear about attacks on power stations and other large installations; here we have attacks on many smaller devices at once, both attacks having the same effect.
